Completed COPALUM CRIMP (click on any picture to enlarge that image)
This is a picture of a completed COPALUM Crimp, in essence a cold-weld, before the application of the heat-shrinked wrapper.
COPALUM Repair Process
Here all the new copper wire has been COPALUM crimped to the existing aluminum wire found behind a switch plate. The crimps are color-sized depending on the wire sizes. The precision dies in the COPALUM tool squeeze the connector and wires into a particular shape using 10,000 pounds of force. The resulting crimp is now gas proof, without being subjected to oxygen no oxidation will occur.
Next all the crimps are covered with a heat-shrink tube which provides very solid insulation.
Finally, a heat gun is used to shrink the tubing over the completed crimps. The copper tails can now be connected to the new device completing the repair and in effect creating a copper only connection.
Now we have cut through the crimp to illustrate what happens to the aluminum and copper wires that have been crimped. What you should notice is that the aluminum wire is now cold-welded to the copper wire creating a single wire moving forward. This is the primary reason that COPALUM crimping is considered a permanent repair.
